Build the Future – Erwin Hymer Group celebrates National Apprenticeships Week 2022

7th - 13th February 2022

National Apprenticeship Week 2022 is the 15th annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships.

The week brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2022 will be 'build the future'; reflecting on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and businesses to develop a talented workforce that is equipped with future-ready skills.

Erwin Hymer Group UK is part of multi-national Thor Industries – the World’s largest leisure vehicle manufacturer. Our UK headquarters and manufacturing plant is in Consett, in the heart of County Durham – and is one of the largest employers in the area.

Erwin Hymer Group has a proven track record of recruiting, training and mentoring Apprentices in all of our business disciplines, working closely with Derwentside College to ensure our Apprentices’ every success.

Erwin Hymer Group is recruiting now for our 2022 cohort, starting their apprenticeship with us in September this year.

If you want to build your career on a solid foundation, an Apprenticeship with Erwin Hymer Group could be the perfect opportunity for you.

We value our Apprentices and aim to give them the opportunity to grow and learn... and hopefully stay with us for a long and rewarding career. Many of our colleagues began their career here as Apprentices, including some of the Managers and Directors here today.

Meet our newest Apprentices, along with others who have recently completed – or are nearing the end of their training – and embarking on full time employment with us:

William Baker

Apprentice Production Engineer

Started Sept. 2021, duration 4 years

Local to Erwin Hymer Group, William was previously studying Construction at Derwentside College, but decided to change discipline to manufacturing.

He sees his Apprenticeship at Erwin Hymer Group as the ideal way to gain skills and experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

He thrives on the practical work-based learning and particularly enjoys developing and fine-tuning his Engineering software and CAD CAM skills.

William has an avid interest in engineering and ‘how things work’ – so being part of the team that manufactures award-winning caravans, motorhomes and campervans is a dream come true!

Ciaran Ghundoo

Apprentice CAD CAM Technical Engineer

Started Sept. 2021, duration 3.5 years

Ciaran went to school and lives in Darlington. After achieving A Levels in Product Design and Mechatronics, he completed his Foundation in Engineering.

His Apprenticeship at Erwin Hymer Group provides him with supported work-based learning, leading to a full-time position in an exciting industry.

Like all of our latest recruits, Ciaran studies at Derwentside College one day a week and his progress is regularly assessed.

Ciaran really enjoys being part of the Erwin Hymer team, being part of the production process and is proud of the finished leisure vehicles made here in County Durham.

Daniel Pitt

Apprentice Electrical Maintenance Engineer

Started Sept. 2021, duration 4 years

Daniel went to local St Bede’s school and lives in Lanchester. After his GCSEs, he began his further education at Derwentside College.

In 2019, Daniel was part of the Elddis Academy which Erwin Hymer Group ran, in partnership with Derwentside College. A year in, COVID hit and this practical training course was halted. It did, however, give Daniel a taste for life at Erwin Hymer Group, and he could see a great future here, so when the opportunity arose to begin his Apprenticeship with us, he grasped it!

Daniel has hit the ground running and enjoys the team spirit at Erwin Hymer Group. He tells us that every day is different and he enjoys the variety.

Like all our Apprentices, Daniel is mentored, constantly learning new skills, which he, in turn, will one day teach new recruits.

Cian Barkus-Walker

Apprentice Engineering Fitter

Started Sept. 2021, duration 4 years

Cian went to Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham and lives locally. Whilst in further education at Derwentside College, he read about our Apprenticeship Scheme on our Facebook and decided it was the obvious next step for him!

Cian likes a challenge and being able to demonstrate that he can think on his feet and deliver practical solutions.

Today, both Cian and Ciaran met with Jonny Devonport, Technical Consultant in Mechanical Engineering at Derwentside College.

Jonny’s meeting today was to discuss what is required of our Apprentices and developing their individual roadmaps to full-time employment in the Company.

Our time-served apprentices are testament to the opportunities an Apprenticeship at Erwin Hymer Group can offer:

Jessie Seaward

Jessie’s career at Erwin Hymer Group began with her 3-year Business Administration apprenticeship, which she successfully completed in April 2020. She is now an integral part of the Commercial Team, working as Sales Administration Assistant, and particularly enjoys the fast-paced environment and team work – both in the office and at the many shows and events we attend.

Louis Bell

Louis joined Erwin Hymer Group straight from school after completing his GCSEs. On our Apprentice scheme Louis has worked in the Machine Shop, Despatch and Sales Administration – and it’s in the latter that he’s really found his feet. Louis has found the Erwin Hymer Team really supportive in his training and helping him ease into the areas of the business best suited to his skills.

Owen Woodhouse

After serving 4 years as an Electrical Engineering Apprentice at Erwin Hymer Group, Owen was offered a permanent position as a Multi-Skilled Electrical Technician (Electrical Bias) in the Company, overseeing the maintenance of our machines and factory layout. Owen completed his HNC in Electrical Engineering at Derwentside College whilst completing his apprenticeship, working on a day release basis. He very much enjoys working at Erwin Hymer Group and the great teamwork and camaraderie he has with his Colleagues.

An Apprenticeship at Erwin Hymer Group benefits both the Apprentice and the Company, with up to 4 years of intensive training, teaching, mentoring and assessment. It’s hard work but hugely rewarding, giving Apprentices a solid and secure knowledge and understanding of the business and its needs, the skills and qualifications to progress and confidence to shine as part of a large team.
